Glipizide, chemically known as N-[2-[4-[[[(cyclohexylamino)carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]phenyl]ethyl]-5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxamide, is a second-generation sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic drug developed by Pfizer Inc. and marketed in the United States in 1984 and in China in 2010 as an extended-release formulation under the trade name RUIYIN. It can promote the secretion of insulin by pancreatic β-cells and enhance the effect of insulin on target tissues; it can also inhibit the secretion of glucagon by pancreatic α-cells, inhibit hepatic gluconeogenesis and promote the use and consumption of glucose by muscles. It is used clinically in patients with mild to moderate type 2 diabetes mellitus who have failed to achieve good results with dietary control therapy alone.
